Maserati A6GCS Monofaro Re-creation 1948
1948 Maserati A6GCS Monofaro
This Maserati A6GCS re-creation is said to have been constructed in the 1980s by Argentinian builder and former driver Nestor Salerno and features a custom steel-tube frame wrapped in aluminum and fiberglass coachwork replicating that of a Fantuzzi-styled monofaro formula race car.
The car is powered by a 4.0-liter Ford inline-six that breathes through triple Weber 45 DCOE carburetors and is mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Additional features include four-wheel disc brakes, 15” wire wheels, coil over shock absorbers, an aluminum fuel tank, an electric cooling fan, and removable cycle-style fenders. The A6GCS 2.0-liter sports racer was introduced in 1947 after being designed by Maserati lead technical engineer Alberto Massimino and Ernesto Maserati just prior to the Maserati brothers’ departure from the company.
The tube-frame design featured independent front suspension and Medardo Fantuzzi-styled aluminum bodywork that earned it the “monofaro” nickname in reference to its single grille-mounted light. Approximately 15 examples of the original A6GCS were built and competed primarily in Formula 2 events, including an appearance in the 1949 Rome Grand Prix with Juan Manuel Fangio at the wheel.
Stopping is handled by four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes with ventilated rotors up front.
Inside the cockpit, seating for two is trimmed in black upholstery amid bare aluminum panels. Additional features include red latch-and-link lap belts, a polished shift knob, and aluminum pedals. The 4.0-liter Ford inline-six breathes through triple Weber 45 DCOE carburetors and features a ribbed valve cover with Maserati lettering, an alternator, and an electric cooling fan. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
Suspension incorporates a double-wishbone independent front setup and a solid rear axle, with coil over shock absorbers at each corner. A tag riveted to the firewall is stamped with the number RPA148476, which is listed as the car’s identification number on its registration.
