BMW Red 700 Sport 1962
1962 BMW 700 Sport
The 700 was designed by Giovanni Michelotti and features a steel monocoque chassis, and the coupe body included a shorter greenhouse and an increased rear-window rake angle as compared to the two-door sedan model. The Sport model featured a rear anti-roll bar, and stopping power is provided by drums at all four corners. The cabin features interior appointments include seatbelts, hand-crank side windows, a fire extinguisher, a glove compartment, a floor-mounted shifter, and a heater.
An aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a 90-mph speedometer and an AutoMeter tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 42k miles. The air-cooled 697cc flat-twin was rebuilt under previous ownership and included rebuilding the cylinder heads, crankshaft, and camshafts as well as installing a replacement oil pump, bearings, pistons, and modified carburetor jets.
Additional features include dual Solex carburetors and a custom exhaust system utilizing a stainless-steel muffler. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle.
