BMW Isetta 600 Turquoise 1958
The BMW 600, produced between 1957 and 1959, was an evolution of the Isetta microcar, designed to accommodate four passengers. It featured a front-opening door and an additional right-side door for rear seat access. The car was powered by a rear-mounted, air-cooled 582cc flat-twin engine, producing approximately 19.5 horsepower at 4,500 rpm. This engine was paired with a four-speed manual transmission, enabling a top speed of around 100 km/h (62 mph).
The 600’s dimensions included a length of 2,900 mm (114.2 inches), a width of 1,400 mm (55 inches), and a height of 1,375 mm (54.3 inches), with a wheelbase measuring 1,700 mm (66.9 inches). The vehicle’s suspension system consisted of independent semi-trailing arms at the rear—a first for BMW—and a front setup derived from the Isetta. Braking was managed by four-wheel drum brakes.
Despite its innovative design, the BMW 600 faced stiff competition from more conventional cars like the Volkswagen Beetle, leading to limited sales success. Approximately 34,813 units were built during its production run.
This particular BMW 600 underwent a comprehensive restoration in 2015, which included stripping the car to its black primer before repainting it in single-stage turquoise, believed to be its original color. The restoration addressed bodywork issues such as replacing the floor pan and installing new steel in areas affected by rust. Notable features of this model include chrome-finished nerf bars, chrome front splash guards, sliding side windows, and a driver-side mirror. The vehicle has been recognized for its excellence, receiving a 2017 AACA Grand National award and a 2016 AACA National First Prize, with plaques commemorating these honors displayed at the front.
The Isetta 600 is equipped with a coil-spring suspension system, and stopping power is provided by hydraulically actuated drum brakes. Access to the cabin is through a front-opening, side-hinged door, with an additional right-side door for rear passengers. Interior features include a horn button, grab strap, and a rear parcel shelf. The steering wheel is mounted on a hinged column and frames a dashboard pod housing a 120-mph speedometer, complemented by a floor-mounted shifter. Powering the vehicle is an air-cooled 582cc flat-twin engine mounted at the rear, factory-rated at 19 horsepower, with power delivered to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transaxle.
This BMW 600 is part of the Ron Sturgeon Collection.
